Dump trailer FAQ

What size dump trailer do I need?

For yard work and small cleanups a 4×8 or 5×8 mini dump is enough. A 6×10 3.5-ton suits most homeowners and small jobs. Contractors and landscapers usually want a 7-ton 6.5×12 to 6.5×16.

What does 3.5-ton or 7-ton mean?

It’s the trailer’s gross rating — roughly 7,000 lb (3.5 ton) or 14,000 lb (7 ton) for trailer plus load. Your payload is that rating minus the trailer’s own weight.

What truck do I need?

A loaded 3.5-ton dump is usually within reach of a half-ton pickup rated for it; a loaded 7-ton typically needs a ¾-ton or 1-ton truck. Always check your truck’s towing and tongue-weight ratings.

Scissor, telescopic or standard hoist?

Telescopic hoists give a steep dump angle for sticky material; scissor hoists are strong and stable for heavy loads; standard ram hoists are simple and affordable.

What is a combo gate?

A gate that works as a loading ramp and as barn doors for dumping, so one trailer can haul equipment and material.
